Elegant home

This elegant home is situated in the charming and very popular ‘Archipelbuurt’ in The Hague.
The quarter, also referred to as ‘De Indische buurt’, is known for the fact that all the streets are named after the various islands that belong to the true Indonesian archipelago.
Due to its special cultural-historical character, the district falls into the category of ‘Protected cityscape’.

Traditionally, De Archipel has been characterised by beautiful city villas and elegant courtyards, which are often inhabited by people from international circles.
Most of the houses are built in the Neo-Renaissance style that was very popular in the Netherlands at the end of the 19th century.
The famous poet Louis Couperus, who himself lived in Indonesia, wrote his famous work ‘Eline Vere’ here. The writer Godfried Bomans and singer/cabaretier Paul van Vliet also resided in this distinctive neighborhood.

Our clients, a family with three grown children, were starting a new phase of their lives in which the children had flown the nest. The house had to be renovated in such a way that the children and any entourage would have their own space when they would come home for weekends and holidays.
In terms of style, they were looking for sustainability, but also for a better contrast between “classic” and “modern”. The clients also wished for a good balance between the reuse of existing furniture (reupholstery), lamps, wall and other decoration, etc. and the introduction of new furniture.
Good coherence of colours and styles was also an important wish.
